What to wear for family photos

Figuring out what to wear for family photos can be stressful. I mean after all, you are be photographed and documenting these fits right?! Let me tell you a little secret. It’s called “color palettes!” All the work is done for you and all you have to do is pick some clothes out that you feel absolutely great in. There is an insane amount of creative, smart people who do this for a living. People in fashion, designers, artists etc. who know what’s up. They know what goes good together and I look to them to because they are SO good at what they do. If I’m in a color slump, I’ll go to Pinterest and search for “fall color palettes” for instance. You’d be amazed at how many cool combinations are out there that you might have never thought of. It takes the guess work out of choosing and matching colors. See below for a sample grouping.

Another trick? Try and pull colors out of your location and incorporate them into your wardrobe. My sister, Bree Pitluk, is really good at this. Check out her blog for some great color pallets. She has a knack for this kind of stuff.

One more trick! You ready for it? Less patterns, MORE textures. Small patterns are fine of course (as long as they aren’t distracting). A motto that I like to live by is less is more. And if you choose to do a pattern, pick one and build around it. I’m not a huge fan of the matchy matchy, so 3-5 colors that look good together is great. Much like the ones pictured above.

Be comfortable – the most important thing in my life is to try to be as comfortable as I can at all times. And for photos, being comfortable is essential. If you are uncomfortable, your entire session is going to be focused around that instead of capturing your best moments. Part of being comfortable is making sure you’re being true to yourself and your style. Don’t feel pressured to change your make-up, your getting ready routine, or your style. Do you. Your photoshoot is all about you, so be yourself 🙂 Pro-Tip: Don’t forget to iron or steam your outfits. Don’t let a perfect photo be ruined by a wrinkled shirt or a bra strap sticking out. Not cute people, not cute.
